Elementary School Program (Kindergarten-5th Grade)
These are the years when the attributes of the PYP profile become more fully understood and defined in each child. Through the exploration of the school-wide transdisciplinary themes, children are actively weaving their own fabric of knowledge in an exciting and holistic way. ISB students learn to gain more independence and to take on a larger role in their own learning process. They are able to implement the learning attitudes that are at the core of the ISB educational foundation along with academic skills. Teachers continue to reinforce the PYP learning attitudes and provide a framework for building knowledge.
Students in Kindergarten receive 90 percent of the formal instruction in the target language, with 3 hours per week in English. 1st-3rd Grades receive 75 percent of the formal instruction in the target language, with 6 hours per week in English. Students in 4th and 5th Grades have a 50-50 model, with half of the formal instruction in the target language and half of the formal instruction in English. Students have weekly classes in music, art and science and bi-weekly classes in physical education. Class sizes range from 15-20 students with one teacher (with an assistant teacher in Kindergarten).
