I’ve been saying forever that I’m gonna add some new work examples, with the thought that I’d do it when I completed my imminent re-design. Well, it’s taking longer than I’d like to get to that project, but providing some new samples is overdue. So here are some websites from the last couple years; mind you, many are intranet sites or internal systems, meaning I’m only showing portions of the work with filler copy and links. About half of these were designed by Van Huynh of El Creative, and the rest by myself; all were developed by me. Print and advertising posts, in similar fashion, are likely to come soon as well.

This plugin adds unlimited extra personalization fields to WP E-Commerce. Then, for each product, you can select which Personalization fields you want to appear.

WPEC Personalize has been updated to work with WPEC 3.8! This plugin adds unlimited extra personalization fields to WP E-Commerce. For example, if you want to ask the customer for Front Engraving, Back Engraving, and a textarea for a Personalized Message, this plugin makes it possible. You can add unlimited fields, and they’ll be added as options. Then, for each product, you can select which Personalization fields you want to appear.

Thanks to Chris Vanzo for his generous help in updating the plugin.

Adding New Fields

Selecting Available Options for Products

What does the user see?

What do you see after a personalized product has been ordered?

How does the plugin work?

FAQs

Installation:

As you would with any WP plugin, drop the “WPEC-Personalize” folder in your plugins directory, and then activate the plugin. You will now see a link for WPEC Personalize in the left column of your administrative panel. This brings you to the page where you manage your personalization fields.

Adding New Fields

You can add an unlimited number of fields here. There’s not much to explain.

Selecting Available Options for Products

You can choose here, for each product, which personalization fields should appear.

What does the user see?

They see exactly what you’d expect — the new options that you’ve added, where they can input their personalizations. This screenshot is using the TwentyTen theme that’s now default to WP.

What do you see after after a personalized product has been ordered?

In the details section of the Sales Logs, a new block of information is added with the personalizations if and only if the product has been personalized.

How does the plugin work?

This plugin does what several existing tutorials explain how to do; it hides the default personalization field, shows the ones you’ve added, combines them into one entry (separated in paragraphs), and adds that string as the value for the default personalization field. So technically, there aren’t new database fields for each customization field; it would therefore be difficult, if not impossible, to do something like sorting by one of the personalization fields.

FAQs

What version of WPEC is this software compatible with?

It is compatible with the latest stable release of WPEC, 3.8. A major update of WPEC ( such as the recent massive update to 3.8 ) may require updates to WPEC Personalize. Updates will be provided either free or at a charge at my discretion, depending upon what the full release looks like, and the time & effort involved in updating the plugin. Hopefully this feature will be integrated into WPEC by then or soon afterward, and this plugin won’t be necessary.

Does this software come with support?

This software does not include any support. I may occasionally answer questions or address particular issues, but I haven’t the time to maintain support for the plugin. This plugin was written for a personal client project, and I’m offering it up for free since I know others might find it useful. But this is NOT meant as a long-term solution to personalization for WPEC, and I wouldn’t recommend building a huge website around this plugin. It is just a workaround until WPEC adds multiple personalization fields to the core.

How can I change the order of my personalization fields?

Currently, there is no drag and drop function for this. One way to do this without deleting everything is to simply rename the fields and reassign the field types. Sophisticated? No. But it works.

I have been very surprised to see Franchise used all over the place; iPhone apps, beautiful websites, a magazine masthead, and even a Finnish board game. Since I’ve been tracking downloads from my own site, downloads have long since passed the 50,000 mark, but I suspect the true number of downloads is closer to 100k.

The primary interactivity compliment to the widely used Typekit is using it for their plugin website as well. All this has been strong motivation to not only get the other weights done, but to get to the other vintage typefaces I’m been itching to start (and finish in one case).

The Butterfly Project is an upcoming series of recording sessions which I hope will each produce a batch of good, albeit simple, original songs. My approach to this task will be to lock myself into a room ( not quite literally ) and write & record at least 3-4 songs in a session. Each session will take place over a weekend, using as many hours as possible without completing neglecting my wife and new baby. This will commence on January 8th. Check it out! Bookmark it!

What if you want to apply an effect or rounded corners to your characters? What if you’ve already drawn your characters and the task of going and redrawing everything would repel you from completing your typeface (which had become the case for me)? What if you have a grungy effect that you want to apply to all your characters?

Once you’ve drawn your characters in Illustrator, you simply select your characters, run the script, and all of your anchors are automatically (and carefully) nudged to the closest whole integer. Then x and y coordinates are rounded either up or down, whichever is closest, and therefore causes the least change to the integrity of your characters. If you’re using a standard setup of 1000 UPM, then the changes to your characters are extremely minimal. You won’t even notice them unless you zoom in extremely close. If you’re using a larger UPM for more control and precision in your font, then the nudging will be even less noticable, if noticable at all. What you will notice is that when you take your characters into FontLab or TypeTool, they look the way they’re supposed to.

And a Couple More Resources for you:

The download is not automatic currently, as I’m not employing digital store software. Rather, I’ll send you the script as soon as I see you’ve purchased it, which is usually the same day unless it’s on a weekend.
